See these happy people? We had just witnessed our children getting married. We were so happy. And so well-dressed.

And the four of us were together several years later, poised to cut into our steaks at a family dinner, when The Big Announcement was made.

Pregnant.

What a great word.

At first we sat there, stunned. Really, mouths hanging open stunned. Then there were hugs and tears and wine. The future grandmothers toasted each other more than once.

It was an event.

Now the four of us are going to a birthday party. Our handsome, healthy, highly intelligent and adorable grandson is turning ONE.

There will be cake, Elmo paper plates and presents. Probably lots of presents.

I hope we can all control ourselves, but then again…aren’t grandparents supposed to be a little indulgent?
