Name that cow.

Really.  Name this cow.

I saw her in Montana.  She was surrounded by friends and relatives.  And they were having lunch outdoors.

I’ve never seen a cow with a bull’s eye on her midsection.  It was quite impressive.  Fashionable, even.

Practice makes perfect. We hope.

The Cougar Creek Band is playing a big gig tomorrow afternoon.
Most of us are nervous.
Some are not.  Like this mandolin player.

I forgot to take pictures at this afternoon’s practice session. Isn’t this a beautiful stage? Picture it filled with guitars, keyboard, mandolins, washboard, harmonica, fiddles, trumpet, trombone, banjo and recorder. It’s a multi-talented group, folks.

We’ve come a long way in two years, since we first played at the dump.

Yes, I said “the dump”. We were a big hit.

travel trip #1

Never leave home without calamine lotion and nail polish.

(I know this is a semi-disgusting picture, but not every photo can be as exciting as a guy posing with an ear of corn).

Day 6: End of the Road

We’re here. The car is unloaded, the guitar cake pan is on the kitchen counter, the instruments are unpacked and tuned, laundry is piled neatly in baskets, and we sat on the screened porch and drank some wine and ate apples and cheese for dinner.

It’s good to be off the road.

Miles: 380
Restaurants: 1 Crackerbarrel
Road kill: 2 unknowns

I love him.

He does anything I tell him to.

Stand over there with the corn, honey.

He loves being a tourist.

Don’t mind the screaming children. Just look like you’re a gunfighter.

The famous Wall’s Drug gave me a headache, but the gunfighter/corn lover bought himself a fancy new pair of slippers.

Give the folks a big wave and get back in the car.  We have to get to Minnesota and find a Perkins.

South Dakota loves big animals.

It’s really quite amazing what you see in front of motels and stores.
I missed the picture of the giant red and purple horse.
Maybe next year.

Right here in River City

“We’ve got trouble, right here in River City”.  Ring any bells?  Are you old enough to know the lyrics to THE MUSIC MAN?

Day 3 of The Road Trip was long and rainy.  But the sun broke through the clouds in the late afternoon, while we were heading north on I-35, through Iowa towards Minnesota.  There was a notation on the Iowa map that said something about the Music Man Museum in Mason City.  Turns out that Mason City = River City.  Meredith Wilson, creator of the musical, grew up there.

Being tourist junkies, we had to stop.

First we saw the water tower.

The museum was closed, due to a wedding. But we will try to go back next year.

I love Montana.

Seeing the mountains appear in the distance…

And get closer…

And wondering about the people who worked in that barn…

Road trip Day 5

Hello, Wyoming!

We finally had a sunny day! Woke up to blue skies and sunshine this morning, and we actually got on the road by 8:15, due to forgetting about the time change. We stopped on the way out of town for gas, water and coffee. I don’t know why it felt like such an easy day–maybe it was the lack of rain.

Mile 112: stopped at the “Coffee Cup” gas station for, well, coffee. Saw three men in cowboy hats, which is always a thrill. Since I couldn’t sneak a picture of any of them in the parking lot, I took this:

Mile 246: stopped in Sheridan, Wyoming for lunch and gas. Glen opened a new bag of sunflower seeds, and we got lost trying to get back on I-90 due to construction and detours.

Mile 298: I yelled at Glen for the first time (not bad for Day 5). He was giving me directions while I was trying to find things for him in the back seat. I then took a nap.

Mile 370: stopped in Billings, Montana for ice cream at the most beautiful McDonalds I’ve ever seen. It had couches, a large tv and laptop stations. I took over the driving and Glen took a nap.

Mile 521: arrived in Bozeman after 7 PM. Ate a couple of tacos, went to Walmart for a few groceries for breakfast, and ended up in the hotel in time to see the last 20 minutes of “The Bachelorette”.

We expect to be at the lake tomorrow afternoon. Hurray!

Restaurants: 1 Perkins, 1 McDonalds, 1 Taco John.
