stompin’ grapes

2013-09-06 007

Last Friday night Dancing Mandolin Player thought we might get in on some grape-stompin’ action at this winery in downtown Sandpoint.  No such luck!  I’m not sure if they would have let wine-soaked patrons into the vats, but this is north Idaho and you never know.  DMP is keeping an eye on this, just in case there’s a chance to stomp in the future.

There was music, though.  And wine.

That’s a pretty darn good combination.

chocolate champagne?

According to Southern Gourmet, this product is stored frozen and then added to champagne as needed.

I wonder if there is a recipe out there somewhere, or if it would be better to order the chocolate mix and have it in the freezer for special dock parties.

the best burgers ever. really.

I’m really sorry you couldn’t taste these.
2013-08-07 002

Our friend Nebraska Jack sent us some of his specially ground hamburger.  He raises his own beef.  And he grinds the burger with bacon.
With bacon.
I’d never heard of this combo before, but I could be behind the times when it comes to gourmet burger-grinding.

These bacon-burgers were so good.
A band should have played.
Fireworks should have exploded over the mountains.
Angels should have sung.
The birds–well, you get the idea.

I shall ask Nebraska Jack when I see him next month if this particular recipe is a secret blend or available to anyone with (a) hamburger and (b) bacon.

I will get details, I promise, because the world needs more of these.

Nebraska Dick and Nebraska Jack.

first day of september

2013-09-01 002

Yes, the day really was this beautiful.
I took my legal pads and pens and clipboard and water and sunglasses and camera and hat and phone down to the dock.

During one moment, I saw 3 speedboats, 1 pontoon boat, 1 water skier, 1 sailboat, 1 train, 1 osprey and 1 dead floating fish.

Otherwise it was pretty quiet on the lake.

So this is what the end of summer looks like.

And now, for the incredible photos of the dead floating fish…

He was probably dropped by an osprey or an eagle who overestimated how big a fish he could lift from the lake.
It’s a pretty big fish.
Not a River Monster, of course, but still…

So…it’s the end of summer.  Darn.

scenes from the kitchen

Not my kitchen, though.  Dancing Mandolin Player’s kitchen.

The woman lives off the land.  Truly.

cornhuskers, on tv and in the kitchen

DMP’s boyfriend Bob shared his television with me on Saturday, the opening day of college football and the debut of the 2013 Nebraska Cornhuskers team.

As did Wyoming, who played Nebraska and kept us on the edge of our seats throughout the entire game. Nebraska won, but not by much.

Meanwhile, back in the kitchen…

della mae: a banjo man recommendation

Banjo Man went to Rhythm & Roots yesterday.  He spent 12 hours listening to music and declared it was the best day of music in his entire life.

He also said he wished I was there with him, because it was the best day of music in his entire life.

And he said he was glad I wasn’t there with him.

Huh????

Because, he quickly explained, of the porta potties.

Enough said.

Here’s the band he’d never heard of that he really, really loved.  I just ordered their cd.
