step it up

fitbit

In another desperate attempt to walk 10,000 steps a day (I’ve never come close, though when visiting battlefield sites in Montana and Wyoming with Banjo Man and Son#2, I wish I’d had a pedometer to impress myself with) I broke down and bought a Fitbit last week.

It is supposed to be the ultimate pedometer, tracking with a computer (or smart phone, which I don’t own) to keep track of your steps.  Online you can also record calories, food, exercise and sleep.  Plus weight loss, if you are so lucky.

I’ve tried other pedometers, but they were unreliable and awkward.  I was always leaning against a kitchen counter or desk and hitting the erase button when the darn things were clipped to the waistband of my pants.

(While I’m typing this, dozens of huge seagulls are flying over my house and I have no idea why.  Very unusual, but they look as if they know where they are headed and why.)

The Fitbit is a bracelet, which is annoying (I’m not a bracelet person) and waterproof (you can wear it in the shower, according to the website).    I bought the blue one because it was $12 cheaper than the black one.

According to the Fitbit info, when I reach 10,000 steps in one day the band vibrates and little lights sweep joyfully across the sliver of screen.  Like a little party on my wrist.

I’ll let you know when that happens.

a ‘nebraska jack’ breakfast casserole

Jack cooks breakfast every Sunday morning for his friends.  8:00 AM.  Don’t be late.

When Banjo Man and I are in Nebraska, we are always thrilled to be invited to join the guys for the weekly feast.

Here’s one of my favorites, from the Pioneer Seed Breakfast, in Waverly, Nebraska.

Nebraska Jack’s Egg Breakfast Bake

Butter a 13 x 9 x 2 inch pan.  Preheat oven to 325.

18 eggs, beaten
1 cup milk
1 cup sour cream
1 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp pepper
1/2 tsp. dry mustard
1 1/2 tsp. onion powder
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1 cup shredded swiss cheese

Mix all of the above ingredients together and pour into pan.  Sprinkle with browned bacon or cooked sausage.  Cover with foil so top doesn’t brown.  Bake 45 min. or until knife inserted comes out clean.

craving summer and jack’s burgers

2013-08-07 002

How does Nebraska Jack make the best burgers in the world?

He told me:

2 parts beef (fat trimmed from it)
1 part cured bacon (he uses Wright’s Bacon’s Ends & Pieces and looks for the packages with lots of meat on them)

Grind twice.

I just finished breakfast, but typing this is making my mouth water.  That’s pathetic.  I should be embarrassed to post this.

Sorry.

sad

do not stand at my grave

One of my dearest and most beloved friends here in Rhode Island lost her son this weekend.  It was sudden and tragic and cruel, in so many ways.

If you believe in prayer, would you say one for her?

Thank you.

Love,

roasted mushroom soup…so good…

mushroomsoup

I have to share this Roasted Mushroom Soup recipe with you.  I multiplied the ingredients by 1 1/2, and pureed about 80% of the bean/broth mixture in the blender instead of the smaller amount mentioned in the recipe.

It was so good.

So good.

It’s a Polar Vortex kind of soup, you know?  To warm your insides long enough to pretend you still like winter?

For some reason I can’t remember, I’d bought a lot of mushrooms.  Banjo Man wanted to know what I’d planned to do with them, because he’d bought some too, meaning they must have been on sale somewhere.  Of course I couldn’t remember why I’d wanted so many mushrooms.  That brain gap sent me to search on Pinterest for a mushroom  soup recipe and I quickly found this one.  The ingredients are simple:  beans, vegetable broth, onions, garlic, mushrooms…and fresh sage leaves.

I splurged on the sage leaves, and the flavor was outrageous.

Thanks to the “shewearsmanyhats” blog for the fabulous soup.

writer day

Pat

Every other month, these fellow writers and I get together to talk about writing, food, writing, chocolate, writing, books, writing, families, writing, diets, writing…well, you get the idea.

There is never a silent moment.

Today is one of those days.  I’m up very early, getting ready to head north to the Big City.

I am in the midst of deciding whether or not to write another book.  My editor would like another.

I have been plotting every day, rather reluctantly and without inspiration.

But I have a great title.

That’s something, right?

It’s a start, I tell myself.   The writers will tell me if the rest of my ideas make sense.  They will add or subtract, encourage and commiserate.  We will drink coffee and eat pizza and brownies and we will come up with many, many ideas for our future books.

I go back and forth about retiring from this writing business, wondering if I am being lazy or if I simply –and justifiably–have a strong sense of self-preservation.

As many of you know, the previous three books took their toll.  And while it is easy for me to spout promises of “balance” in the future, the truth is that writing is an “all or nothing” business, at least for me.  But I need to keep working on balance.  Obviously.
