We tasted 14 different whiskies.

And a good time was had by all.

scotch and cock-a-leekie soup

Our Good Friend Bachelor Steve is a Scotch lover, just like Banjo Man.  During the overseas-travel phase of my life (also called “getting away from the kids”) I discovered a love of exploring liquor stores, the kinds of small intimate wood-panelled shops with proprietors who love to talk about whisky and offer a “wee dram” to enthusiastic shoppers.

I bought cognac from a stall in a Paris market.   Single malt Scotch at its Orkney distillery.  Scotch poured and bottled from a cask in London (a bottle of which was brought to Bachelor Steve).  Scotch from a tasting at Stirling Castle.  Scotch and cognac from airport duty-free stores.  I could fit three bottles in my leather backpack (during the years before 9-11).

Banjo Man would be so excited when I staggered off the bus from Boston and handed over the backpack (I don’t drink the hard stuff).

Anyway, Bachelor Steve has long longed to have a Scotch-tasting event, since he has quite a collection of single malts now.  He has invited two other couples for the tasting, and I am producing a genuine Scottish dinner.

There will be six courses.  And I have never made any of these recipes before in my life.  In other words, this is going to be a busy day.  Which is why I’m up at 4:30 to work before the madness begins.

I bought 8 plaid placemats on sale at JCPennys.  Matching brown napkins at the consignment store.  A $2 ceramic fish platter for the smoked salmon appetizer.  I have 2 cd’s of Scottish music.  And the guests are supposed to wear something plaid.

Oh, and according to Tasting Rules, there will be no perfumes, colognes, after shave, scented candles or heavy scents of any kind that could ruin the “nose” part of the tasting.  Thank  goodness I will be in the kitchen when all that sniffing goes on.

Just a hint about Scottish food:  potatoes, leeks, oatmeal.
Wish me luck.

THE DEBT

what we rented last week…

Banjo Man could barely breathe for the excitement.  We ate a box of Wheat Thins, 2 cans of roasted peanuts and 2 salads while watching the movie.

He likes spy thrillers, but nothing scary (like horror movies).  I have to be very careful on the rare times we go into a movie theatre, because when Banjo Man is frightened he tends to swear.  Very loudly.  Like someone with Tourette’s.

We saw “THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATOO” last week and he did very well, just some muttering under his breath at times.

I love Helen Mirren.  Next time we’re going to rent “RED”, which I hear is a good Mirren movie.

For more info on the movie, click here:  CHECK OUT THE DEBT.

right around the corner

What was 1/2 price at Wal-Mart last Friday:

Okay, I know this isn’t the best photograph. The darn things wouldn’t hold still.

They are a little sad, a little droopy, but they are what they are and what they are is tulips. And I do love tulips.  And daffodils.  You can keep your roses, thank you very much.  And don’t put me anywhere near a lily unless you have a box of tissues handy.

I once toured a Newport mansion (The Breakers, the biggest of all) on a snowy December evening.  There was a choir and many Christmas trees and wreaths and tinsel and candles and…lilies.  Lilies in every freakin’room.  I drove home with Kleenex stuffed up my nostrils.

Well, that was a lovely holiday memory.

Anyway…

All you gardeners let me know when your tulips are up, will you?

act iii: annual gathering of writers

Writers are odd people.  We love to get together and talk about writing, but first we have to talk about…lots of other things.

Such as our new favorite beauty products.

Sharon's new favorites

Pat's Aveeno lotion with blueberry!

(I didn’t have a new beauty favorite to share this year, but I did bring my new favorite paring knives as gifts, so what does that tell you?)

And our new favorite recipes.

Sharon with chicken cordon bleu.

Pat's brownies, baked for Sharon's birthday.

Pat and Sharon's new favorite drink.

And our new favorite wine.  And our old favorite pizza.  And our new favorite Nantucket Blueberry Pie Cake (for breakfast, with Greek yogurt, so as to be healthy).

Nantucket Blueberry Pie Cake

Pat and Sharon brainstorming with brain food.

And then, after we pass the chocolate around, we talk about writing.

What a great weekend!!!!!

[thank you so much, sharon.]
