closer to home

Do you like your thriller/mysteries/crime fiction novels closer to home?  How about rural, upstate New York?

bleakHere’s a great series for you, I promise.  Read them in order.  That’s very important!!!!

Check out Julia’s WEBSITE  for more info.  I had the pleasure of meeting her once, at a librarian’s convention in Boston I attended with a friend from Alabama who was also one of the speakers.   She has won a ton of awards, too many to list here.  And I love her books.

The newest book in the series just came out a few weeks ago, so guess what I will be reading on the flight from Providence to Austin in a couple of weeks!!!

Because I am not one of those people who knows “who did it” halfway through the book, I am in awe of mystery writers and their intricate plotting and machinations meant to fool the reader.  I never know who committed the murder unless the author tells me.  I am easy to fool, easy to manipulate with red herring clues and plot twists.

Don’t you love a good plot twist?  A great villain?  A mystery that keeps you turning the pages when you should be sleeping or cooking or working or cleaning something?

Let it snow, baby.  Let it snow.

the austin clinic, a migraine and harry hole

bat

Harry Hole is a fictional character.

Have you heard of him???

If you have, you know that in his most recent book (the one published in October, 2013) he was in serious, bloody, deathly, deadly trouble.

Last October I had a migraine and ended up going to a walk in clinic for medication, where I met with a doctor.  I was reading my Kindle while waiting to talk to her, and we immediately began discussing books.  When she heard there was a new Harry Hole novel, she almost fell off her swivel stool.

Really.  She gasped, too.  (There was a good reason for that, but because it’s book 10 I’m not going to tell you what it is).

I explained to her that I hadn’t read it yet, that I had splurged and bought it on my Kindle as a reward for when my own writing was finished, that I would be reading it in November.  That I hadn’t read any reviews and didn’t want to know what was going to happen.  I didn’t want any hints or spoilers.

She was thrilled.  We exchanged names of favorite authors and scribbled book titles on scratch paper and promised to read each other’s recommendations.

So, you probably want to know who Harry Hole is.

Harry is a detective on the Oslo police department in Norway.  He’s a genius, a lone wolf, a man with “issues”.   The books, by the brilliant Jo Nesbo, were not released in order in English, so reading them in chronological order can be a bit of a challenge.

For more information, check out Crime Fiction Lover’s Guide to Harry Hole.

I really enjoy these gritty, brilliant crime novels set in dark, cold countries.  No snakes, no bugs, no malaria…could that be the reason?

p.s.  I am on page 44.  I am reading very, very slowly.  I don’t want it to end.  And I hope Jo Nesbo writes quickly and spends many hours at his desk writing the next novels.

for a long winter by the fire…

keeperIf you liked GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATOO, you will like this.

If you didn’t like GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATOO because it was too gory and graphic and violent, you will like this because it’s not gory, graphic and over-the-top violent.

If you like mysteries, that is.

This is the first book in a “cold case” crime fiction series set in Copenhagen.  I’ve read all three books in the “Department Q” series and can’t wait for the next one to come out.

You can read more about it HERE.

And you can blame me if you don’t finish baking your cookies, wrapping your gifts, chopping your wood or answering the telephone.

sunday dinner with harley chick–and a recipe

Harley Chick is one killer cook.  She is the queen of vegetarian cooking.

“Are you free tonight?”  she asked Sunday morning.  “I have a recipe I want to try.”

She had a recipe she wanted to try????  My lucky day.  I was free.  I was hungry.  Banjo Man started drooling.

Here’s what she made.  This recipe is from Vegetarian Times.  You might want to check out their website.  It’s a treasure trove of drool-inducing recipes.

*****Harley Chick used KALE instead of swiss chard in this recipe.  It was FABULOUS!!!!!******

Layered Sweet Potato Torte

Layered Sweet Potato Torte

Serves 8

Thinly sliced sweet potatoes are both the filling and the crust for this hearty tart.
  • ¼ cup olive oil, for brushing
  • 1 lb. Swiss chard, stems removed
  • 2 ½ lb. sweet potatoes, sliced ⅛-inch thick
  • 3 tsp. chopped fresh rosemary
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced (2 tsp.)
  • 1 small red onion, chopped (¾ cup)
  • 3 oz. Taleggio or blue cheese, crumbled

1. Preheat oven to 450°F. Brush 9-inch springform pan with oil.

2. Stack 6 chard leaves on cutting board, and roll tightly into cylinder. Slice cylinder to chiffonade leaves into thin strands. Repeat with remaining leaves.

3. Place 1 sweet potato slice in center of bottom of prepared springform pan. Arrange slices in circles around center slice, overlapping slices by at least half. Brush with oil, sprinkle with 1 tsp. chopped rosemary and one-third minced garlic, and season with salt and pepper (if desired). Spread 1 cup Swiss chard over potatoes, sprinkle with 1/4 cup chopped onion and one-third crumbled Taleggio. Arrange another layer of sweet potatoes over chard, and press down on potatoes to flatten layers. Repeat layering twice.

4. Place torte on baking sheet, and cover with foil. Bake 45 minutes. Uncover, and bake 15 minutes. Cool 15 minutes. Press top of torte to remove excess liquid.

5. Turn torte upside-down on platter, unmold, and serve. For a crispier top, unmold onto ovenproof platter, and brush top of torte with oil. Broil 3 to 5 minutes, or until potato slices begin to brown and start to curl. Cool 10 minutes before slicing.

have turkey will travel

This was on my flight from Providence to  Baltimore last Tuesday afternoon:

2013-11-19 004

Yes, it is a turkey.  It didn’t look frozen.  It was–obviously–not in a shopping bag.

It was carried by a man.  A man traveling by himself.   A man traveling by himself with his turkey.

Maybe he won it.
Maybe it was a gift.  A surprise goodbye present.
Surely there are no turkey shortages in the USA right now.

I was so glad I had my camera in my purse.  Because, really, how often do you see a turkey in the overhead bin?

I’ve seen people board planes with their styrofoam coolers filled with dry ice and live lobsters.  That’s pretty common in New England.

But a turkey?

Really, there is.

on the road again

Guess where I am!

Here’s a hint:

2013-03-10 004

2013-03-13 016No? You can’t figure it out?

How about this?

2013-10-26 001

Yes, I’m back in Texas. But it’s a SECRET!! Mom and I flew down to Austin yesterday and will surprise Son #1 for his birthday later on today. We don’t think he has any idea that he is about to be invaded by his maternal elders and expected to party for the next four days. I hope he’s up to it.

I can post this today because he’s at work and only reads his mother’s blog when his wife reminds him to. Amber and Son #2 have conspired to keep this a secret and we’ve all been plotting madly for several months.

Great fun! I’ll let you know what happens!

looking on the brightside

Brightside.  That’s the name of my new Samsung Verizon phone.

It is not a Smart phone, because I am too cheap to spend an extra $30 a month to be on the internet from my phone, which doesn’t work in my home in RI due to an ancient glacier.

So when I’m in RI I tend to keep my cell phone in my car, and since I use my car about once a week, you can see that I have no need to check my email or facebook page while in the Walmart parking lot.  I only use it if I need to call Banjo Man for something important.  We are sharing one car these days, which means we have to communicate in order to do each other’s errands.  I only need my phone when I’m on the road or in Texas, and even then there are issues with connections.

No, no, no….I’m doing it again.  I’m being negative about my phone!!!  That’s the point of this blog post, to say that I am going to work on having a better attitude about my cell phone.  I want to EMBRACE the technology.  I want to love my phone, the way all of you out there love your phones.

I see you, in airports and restaurants and–god forbid, in your cars—loving your phones.  I hear you in bathroom stalls and in line at the prescription pick up sections at the pharmacy.  I hear you in grocery stores and I see you texting in the movies.

You love your phones.  You love your technology.

ooops…I’m feeling the hostility again.  Must.  Get.  A.  Grip.

SERIOUSLY.  I want to have a new attitude about my phone.  It is pretty.  I like the big screen and the pictures on the front.  It might be a lot easier to use than the last one. It has a real keyboard.  I love real keyboards!!  Maybe it will even take pretty pictures! I love pretty pictures!

I seriously vow to do better to stay in touch with those I love, with my friends and my family.  I am going to text, even though it costs 20 cents.  I am no longer going to be a techno hermit.

I am going to COMMUNICATE through something other than email.  (Can I help it if I love email and blogging?)

My phone is on.  Call me.  As soon as I can figure out how to tell if I have voice mail, I’ll call you back.

(not joking)

banjo man’s present

I usually research special purchases like this, but I found this and on a whim bought it.  I’m so glad I did!  Banjo Man loved it and conducted his own taste test between it and a special Christmas gift from 2010 of Hine cognac.  Needless to say, he enjoyed his evening very much.

90-95) Points – Wine Enthusiast:

In 1838 Pascal Dartigalongue, originally from Saint Lannes near Madiran, moved to Nogaro in the Gers and founded the Dartigalongue masion d’Armagnac, which has been owned and operated by the family ever since. Each year the finest white wines are distilled into armagnac, stored in seasoned oak casks and matured for several years in their 19th century, two story cellar.

Matured for a minimum of fifteen years, Dartigalongue Hors D’Age Bas Armagnac displays a complex nose of caramel, toasted almond, nougat and dried fruit. The medium-bodied, fruit-forward palate is accented by hints of tobacco, cedar and mineral which linger through the finish.
