i’m trying, i really am

Okay, here’s why I haven’t posted anything for a few days.

  1.  Sarge is bringing his lady love home to RI to meet the family this holiday weekend.  This has involved a lot of cleaning and meal prep and grocery shopping (I’ve been to Walmart twice in two days, God help me!) and lots of angst over what to feed someone of the Hindu religion.  After a winter of laziness, I seem to have lost my cooking mojo.
  2.   Two dental visits this week.  One was a six-month cleaning and I confess that this morning, in between scraping and all that stuff, I asked the two hygienists if either one of them was Hindu (they were not).  I am searching for help anywhere I can find it, folks.  Sarge answered my panicked phone call this morning and said “she eats chicken and hot stuff”.  Well, there’s a plan.
  3.   I have been searching for cooked lobster.  Aesha wants to try lobster, but on Memorial Day weekend there will be long lines at the seafood restaurants.  Our outdoor lobster boiling pot is broken and there is no way, not even for Sarge, that I am boiling lobster in the house.  The smell would last until October.  Banjo Man is going to town later to see if he can find cooked lobster so I can make a lobster pot pie for Friday night.  And by the way, did I tell you that the price of cooked lobster is $45 a pound????!!!!!????  I cannot believe that Banjo Man didn’t flinch.  But he’s a romantic.
  4.  Banjo Man has worn himself out painting a bedroom and doing yard work.  I have been hovering and nagging and fretting over how he has worn himself out.  It’s keeping me busy.
  5. My new computer is up and running, but the transfer of my files from one computer to the new one, via Carbonite, is taking days.  As in 7 days.  At least.  So, no pictures, no music, until it’s over.
  6.  I stole a black out shade, one of those $3.18 paper ones, from Walmart yesterday.  It was a mistake–I didn’t see it in the cart when I checked out.  In fact, I was driving out of Walmart when I realized I didn’t remember putting it on the conveyor belt.  So I went back to my parking spot and there in the cart return corral was my cart, with the long stick-like box still there.  I hadn’t even noticed when I unloaded my groceries into the car!  I must have been thinking about Hindu food.  The shade was for Banjo Man, and the trip to Walmart was made in a hurry so he could have a nap and block out the light yesterday afternoon (see #4).
  7.  Today I paid for the shade, though Brittany-the-check-out-gal didn’t quite understand what I was talking about.  She then told me that last week a guy stole 18 vacuum cleaners at once.  They didn’t stop him but they got the license plate number.  (Okay, why didn’t they stop him?????  Am I the only one wondering this????)
  8. I have been on a no sugar, no flour, no dairy, no eggs, no diet soda diet for about six weeks.  Today, after a couple of stressful, long-grocery-list hours in Walmart and a cart filled with ingredients for four chicken casseroles and a possible lobster pie and a possible pizza lunch and possible breakfast ideas and tension rods to make “curtains” for the guest area kitchen cabinets, I freaked out and bought a Subway sandwich, diet coke and a little box of sugar cookies, which I inhaled on the ride home.
  9.  Also on the way home I wiped the crumbs off my face and stopped at four places to look for cooked lobster.  No luck, but Banjo Man decided to get involved (after spending the morning working on making his yard look beautiful) came up with a plan (see #3).
  10.  The Bachelorette started last night, with the gorgeous Jojo in a slinky sparkly gold-peach gown and 26 men so filled with shock and awe that they proceeded to calm their nerves with alcohol.  I can’t wait to recap it for you.  God only knows what is going to happen this season, but Jojo has confessed she likes bad boys.  Uh oh.
  11. To solve the “chicken” and “hot” dilemma, I am making my friend Pat’s Buffalo Chicken Mac & Cheese as soon as I stop typing this.  It takes four plastic shopping bags full of ingredients and many, many cooking pans.  I will let you know if it’s worth it.

In the meantime, we can all start guessing how much lobster meat is in a pound.  A cup?  Two cups?

THURSDAY MORNING QUIZ

Banjo Man is happy because:

(A)  My plane was on time and now he can go home and show off his beautifully painted room,

(B)  There is a new Wendy’s on Route 4 and I agreed to stop there for lunch on the way home from the airport, or

(C)  He ordered the new Jalapeno Fresca Chicken Sandwich.  And a bowl of chili.

a night with patty

0513162106a

Yep, that’s me on the left.

The reason I came to Austin for the week was to attend this concert and see Patty Griffin in person (I have all of her cd’s but had never seen her).  Story Man bought tickets to a benefit concert at Stubb’s (yes, where those bottles of bbq sauce on the grocery store shelves come from).

Breakthrough Austin helps children who would be “first generation” college students make it through college.  They start the program in 6th grade, have a 100% high school graduation rate and 93% go on to attend college (and 90% of them graduate).  It’s a wonderful cause.

I wanted to share some pictures with you.  This was the best I could do on my phone!

More Pie and Story Man wait for the show to begin.

Patty sang for almost an hour and a half.  It was hot and humid, and she’d been on tour for months.  Her voice was obviously tired, but she sang through the rough spots and hit all of the notes with incredible power.  I loved her gospel-based songs the best (my favorite cd is “Downtown Church”) and the times she stood at the microphone, without her guitar, and just sang those bluesy songs were highlights for me.  That’s what she was meant to do in this life, and I was so happy and honored to be there to see and hear her.

If you’ve ever been to music shows in Austin (or other parts of Texas, I hear) you know that the audience talks.  They talk to each other constantly while the show is on.  It is truly amazing and horrifying and exasperating and annoying.  Bad habit, Austin!!!!

When Patty was about to sing her last song (before the two-song encore) two mid-thirty-ish woman hustled over to my left to try to talk the security guy into letting them go in front of the barricade (where I was leaning) to take pictures.  They thought that if they flirted and talked enough they would get their way.

What they got was me, telling them (rather firmly) to please be quiet because this was the last song.

They were shocked.  And embarrassed.  They apologized twice and disappeared back into the crowd.  Story Man couldn’t stop laughing.

During the encore it happened again, with two different women.  Same security guard, same objective.  Same loud conversation.  So I shushed them and glared.  And they stopped–at least for a minute or so–before starting up again.  But by that time the show was over.  They never got their way.

Story Man was highly amused and couldn’t believe that people actually listened to me and shut up.

“It’s the white hair,” I said.  “It’s like I’m their mother telling them to be quiet.”   Or their about-to-retire first-grade teacher, giving them “that look” and making them behave.

Once in a while there’s an advantage to growing old.

playtime in texas

I’ve been busy, hanging out with the Funny Grandson.  We’re spending our days together while his parents are at work.  We have made blueberry pancakes, shared bowls of strawberries, played games, watched episodes of Star Wars Clones, taken walks and played many, many rounds of “treasure hunt” at the neighborhood playground.

IMG_0971

We are having a great time.  Even though he cheats at Candy Land.

IMG_0972

On Sunday we’re having a Super Party.  I bought  the 1978 Superman movie (I’ve always been a big Superman fan), delivered by Amazon today.  We’re going to eat Super Snacks and–his idea– have Super Drinks (lemonade has been requested) and have a Super Good Time.

“Party Grandma” is just getting warmed up…

a hike? really?

I went hiking.

(No one has ever heard me say that.)

IMG_0951

On Monday Story Man and I went out for an early lunch at one of our favorite places, Kerbey Lane.  I had the pear and cheese toasted sandwich.  Story Man ate a cheeseburger.

We resisted ordering the special dessert, peanut-butter-banana pie.

We stopped at a gas station for some bottled water, then just a few blocks later were in a neighborhood.   The above sign showed the way to this “path”.

IMG_0959

This photo was taken when we were going up the hill, heading back to the car.  But you can see that this was not exactly a bike path.

Story Man made sure I didn’t fall on my little non-hiking-experienced ass.

At the bottom was a limestone-lined creek.  They call them “pools” around here.  Beautiful!

IMG_0953IMG_0954IMG_0957

Not many people here, but on weekends it’s crowded.  I can see why.

Yes, it was hot!  But the water was cool and we drank our water and waded around a little bit before hiking back up the hill to the road.

This part of Texas has had a wet spring, but places like this dry up in the summer if there’s no rain.

Which is why the Texas part of the family will be heading to lake in a couple of months.

a two-crock pot morning

My kind of morning, up at six and cooking by seven (must ease into the day with a couple of mugs of coffee).  Pot roast for Son #1 and potato-sausage soup (the Olive Garden recipe) for Son #2.

Story Man headed off to the BBQ pit at 3:45 this morning.  We’re hauling the pot roast north for a family dinner later on this afternoon and I will spend a few days with the Funny Grandson.  I am armed with the ingredients for blueberry pancakes, a new card game and the Superman movie.

Some of you asked to see the Stolen Mother’s Day card.  Here it is.

IMG_0966

Oops.  I can’t figure out how to turn this.   But don’t you love the patriotic thigh-cut underwear?

I don’t own anything like that.

But I do have five crock pots.

not guilty

You can’t see his cargo shorts very well, but when I took this picture Mother’s Day morning, the card Story Man intended to buy for me was tucked into his pants pocket.. If you look closely you might be able to see a brown envelope sticking out.

IMG_0950

It wasn’t until we got back to the condo, rushing to unpack food and head north to the family dinner, that he realised he’d walked out of the store without paying for the card.

He was mortified.  Truly upset.  He had stolen his mother’s Mother’s Day card.

“Just take it to the store tonight when we get back and pay for it,” I said.  “End your life of crime and repent.”

He was not amused.  He was still embarrassed and disgusted with himself.

His sister-in-law and I didn’t make too many jokes, not really.  Maybe that “receiving stolen merchandise” and being “an accessory to a crime” comments were over the top.  Maybe I shouldn’t have pretended to burn my fingers when I touched the envelope.

Okay, maybe we made a few more jokes than necessary, but the last two people in the universe to ever steal anything are these two Texas sons.

At 8:30 Sunday night Story Man took my really special Wonder Woman card back to the store and officially purchased it.

The crime spree was over.

mother’s day texas-style

Is there any more pie???IMG_0948

Story Man and I went to HEB, the local supermarket chain, Sunday morning.

We were greeted with a Wall of Pie.

Texas strawberry-berry pie.

There were Mother’s Day balloons on the ceiling, their ribbons hanging down just low enough for little children to jump up and down to try to grabIMG_0946

Lots of jumping and lots of Pie?  Welcome to a holiday in Austin!

There were flower bouquets, of course.

IMG_0945

And bouquets that weren’t flowers.

IMG_0947

In the midst of the festivity, Story Man and I managed to fill the cart with practical and necessary groceries.  My Italian meat sauce is in high demand  with my Texas sons so I will be making a triple batch on Tuesday.

We headed up to see the Round Rock Family and spent the afternoon and evening eating and laughing and playing and talking.

We ate take-out Chinese (my daughter-in-law’s Mother’s Day wish) and Strawberry-berry pie.  Of course.  It was the first thing in our HEB shopping cart, after all.

Happy Mother’s Day, everyone.  I hope your day was filled with flowers or chocolate or hugs or phone calls…and maybe even a decadent slice of pie.

Mothers deserve pie.

flyin’ high this morning

Up at 3:15, on the road at 3:45 with Banjo Man behind the wheel and my travel mug filled with coffee.

Suitcase, carry-on, purse, Kindle, phone, glasses….. yep, got it all.

Arrived at the airport at 4:15 for a 5:45 AM flight only to realize the line to check in at Southwest stretched the entire width of the airport.  I hadn’t seen lines like that since the week before Christmas.

Gulp.

It took a while.  Thank goodness the security lines were moving quickly, though after I stepped out of the scanning booth a female agent took my hands and examined the insides of my wrists.  I’m still wondering why.

Made it to the gate with five minutes to spare!

Quick flight to Baltimore, with only an hour between flights.  There were some new stores:

IMG_20160507_073155_kindlephoto-52581

And at the America shop, a Bernie Sanders t-shirt, among other pro-Democrat shirts.  Maryland is obviously a “blue state”.

IMG_20160507_073610

Then it was time to board the plane for Austin.  Not a lot of people were heading to Texas at 8 AM, so I had a whole row to myself.  The plane was so cold it brought back memories of attending Sarge’s high school football games…in December.  Bring on some Texas heat!!!!

The cab ride to the condo was a bit of an adventure.  The driver didn’t know much English, especially not “left” and “right”.  But I made it.

I am actually afraid of taxis.  I don’t like placing my life in the hands of a stranger.  Airplanes are easy–I fall asleep during take off–but getting into a cab at the end of the flight is when I have to remind myself to be brave and pretend to be brave.

I have a couple of very scary taxi stories.  Of the “near death experience” kind.  New Orleans.  Washington, D.C., Rome.  Let me say right now, I WILL NEVER TAKE ANOTHER CAB TO OR FROM THE NEW ORLEANS AIRPORT.

Because I want to live.  And who doesn’t?

My first taxi driver from the Austin airport, about ten years ago, was a Willie Nelson lookalike, complete with the long braid.  And three inch fingernails!!!!!

I was mesmerized and forgot to be scared.

Banjo Man and I called for a cab to take us to our favorite pub last March and the guy showed up in a karaoke van.  Mirror balls, speakers, monitors, ancient shag carpet, black interior and flashing Christmas lights.  Right before we got to the Saxon Pub the driver turned it all on for us (he has found his karaoke cab niche), so we made quite an entrance pulling up into the small parking area in front of the bar.

I wish he’d been at the airport at 11:00 this morning.  I was so happy to be in Austin I felt like singing!!!
