he’s fine

Just a quick note as I take a break from nursing Banjo Man back to health:

He is fine.

He is feeling no pain.

He has four different ice packs.  We hope one of them will meet his demands.

He loved his doctors, nurses and surgical team.  The procedure went beautifully and he should be back to normal, without knee pain, in a few short weeks.

Story Man and Daughter Nurse Nancy are helping me care for him, which basically means arranging pillows, ice packs and cups of tea.

He is happily settled on the Giant Couch, his computer, phone and the television remote within reach.

Feel free to call.

taste of new england

Many of you reading this know that Banjo Man is having a knee procedure (aka surgery, but not a knee replacement) on Wednesday.

He is quite happy about it.

Blurry but happy Banjo Man.

Blurry but happy Banjo Man.

(As you can see, I have not perfected taking pictures with my I-phone).

On Tuesday we drove north to meet with the surgeon and sign papers.  Many instructions were given and questions answered.

Banjo Man always has a lot of questions.

Then, instead of driving straight home, we detoured to Wickford, a historic small town on the bay.  The movie “Witches of Eastwick” was inspired by this location, by the way.

And our lunches:

Scallop roll.

Scallop roll.

Lobster roll.

Lobster roll.

I hadn’t had a lobster roll in twenty years, so I took half of it home to eat for lunch today.

It was  a cool, sunny, brilliant autumn day.  Perfect for sightseeing.  We pretended we were still on our road trip and sampling a bit of New England as if we had never seen it before.

Tomorrow?  The knee surgery.

He’ll be fine.  Stay tuned.

Story Man (Son #2) is here for the week and is finishing up the yard work before winter.  Sarge arrives Friday night, as does Thomas (of Cousins Weekend fame!!).

We’re going to nurse Banjo Man back to health and eat a **lot** of lasagna.

plan b in the world of furniture

Well, I had a phone call from the giant furniture store yesterday.  The fabric I’d picked out for the four dining room chairs has been discontinued and I must select another fabric.  But there were not a lot of choices and none of them would work.  The salesman offered another brand of Parsons chair whose manufacturer offered the original fabric, but that meant that Banjo Man and I would have to go north and test more chairs.

But…Banjo Man is very, very busy with work.

And there is no way I’m going to pick out the chairs myself and hear, “How could you think this was comfortable????” for the rest of my married life.

We are both really busy all week, and then Story Man (Son #2) arrives Friday and Daughter Nancy is on vacation and my nephew is coming and Sarge will be zooming in and our house will be “party central” until the 26th of this month.  In the middle of that Banjo Man has doctor appointments and knee surgery.

The new chair purchase, part 2, will have to wait.

The pretty wood chairs are set to go to the consignment store and Banjo Man has declared that they are too uncomfortable for company, so they are banished to the basement awaiting a new home.

Even though they are so pretty.

What to do, what to do….

Tucked under the table.

It’s not as nice as the fancy Parsons chairs would have been.  And maybe our dinner guests will think it’s all a bit strange, sitting on office chairs at the dinner table.  But Banjo Man assures me that they won’t care because the seats are so comfortable.

We tested them with Jeff and Angela Sunday night and they didn’t seem to mind.

The search for new dining room chairs will be continued in 2016…

pumpkin lust

I went shopping with Harley Chick Friday morning.

We had a plan:  (1) to go to the Christmas Tree Shop (which has nothing to do with trees and instead has lots of discount stuff at great prices) and (2) to go to the sewing machine store and see if now is the time to buy new machines (they’re having a huge sale on October 17 and we needed to know if we should go that day and buy stuff).

IMG_0212

This might be one of those only-in Rhode-Island chains.

After buying lots of holiday paper goods and assorted bargains, I took a picture of the inflated scarecrow/pumpkin monster by the exit door while Harley Chick was paying for her purchases.

IMG_0209

I never ever want one of these in my front yard.

And then I said, “Harley Chick, pose by the pumpkin so I can put this on the blog.”

And she did…except she bumped into the inflated monster and tried to keep it from falling over.  The picture?  Here it is:

IMG_0210

Why the pumpkin is smiling.

She did not understand why I thought this was so funny.  And when she realized the problem–illegal pumpkin groping—she insisted we take another picture so I could delete this one.

Of course I didn’t delete it.  I told her I wasn’t going to delete it.  I was still laughing as we shoved our bags into the trunk of her car.

IMG_0211

Harley Chick, behaving herself.

We went on to the sewing machine store, where we both groped new sewing machines.  I may or may not buy a new sewing machine, a new table and a new light.  Harley Chick may or may not buy a new sewing machine, a new table and a new light.

Neither one of us spends money without thinking about it a lot, so this is going to take some time.

Stay tuned and keep your pumpkins safe.

why i retired

IMG_319552216719655

As my friend Pat wrote, when she sent this to me, “Ring a bell?”

I laughed out loud.

And my friend Sharon added, “Wish you’d had this shirt for your retirement party!”

How true.

Writing wasn’t always hell, of course.  Just the last ten years or so.  Before that?  Not always so bad.  I loved typing “The End”.  I love royalty season and writers conferences and fancy dinners.  I even enjoyed most of the book signings.

And so did Pookie.

hello old cat

IMG_0202

I’ve been decorating.  This little cat came from one of Banjo Man’s sisters when she worked for Hallmark.  One Halloween she sent us a box of decorations, which we put to good use for almost thirty years.

Or maybe more.

IMG_0200The spider was always a hit.  He has a long cord attached to his head and has often hung from the light over the kitchen island.

I love fall.  I bought a container of little plastic pumpkins at Marshalls so I don’t have to hunt for the real things again this year.  The spider is sitting on some of them.

I like his smile.

Speaking of smiles, I am off to the dentist this morning.  No one likes to go to the dentist, but I am one of those people who really should be on Valium to have my teeth cleaned.

It is just so stressful and I am not brave.

Like going to the hairdresser, I just want the technician to do the job as quickly and efficiently as possible and don’t bother with the chit chat.  Just get me out of the chair.

I don’t like being trapped in the chair.

Do any of you feel that way or is it only me?

I’d really like to know.

goodbye hurricane, hello sun

The hurricane went somewhere else.  I stopped paying attention to the tv weathermen right after I heard we weren’t going to get hit.

Hurray!

It has rained for days, though.  Friday was one of those “better build an ark” kinds of rainy days, the kind we longed for last summer during the long weeks of fire danger.  But this morning we can see blue sky and sunshine.  It is very welcome!  Now we can finish unloading the car.

There is still a lot of stuff in that car.

Yesterday, despite the gray skies and wind, Banjo Man declared he wanted new dining room chairs.  He wanted comfort, he declared.

Banjo Man is all about comfort.  Did I tell you he drives while sitting on a high-density foam pillow he cut to fit his flat-bottomed bottom?

So off we went to several consignment stores, where I hoped against hope that we would find something lovely and sufficiently comfortable.  But that was not to be–I knew it would be almost impossible–so we ended up far away in the Big Suburbs at the biggest furniture store in the state.

At the consignment stores I bought five old parfait dishes and Banjo Man bought a hatchet.

Yes, a hatchet.

But he didn’t ask me why I needed parfait glasses so I didn’t ask why he needed a hatchet and that is why we have stay married for 45 years, right?

Here he is posing in front of the pumpkin house at the giant furniture store.  Look how happy he is at the prospect of new furniture!

IMG_0199

Oops. I-phone didn’t focus.

I tried not to hyperventilate or behave badly, as I did during  the new sofa shopping fiasco of 2011.  Click here to read all about it.

Here’s what we decided upon.

IMG_0195

The teal/brown fabric sample on the beige chair is what we picked out.

Then–giddy with relief– I sent a text message to my daughter saying I bought new dining room chairs, but to be funny I sent this pic:

IMG_0198

I knew she’d assume I bought four of the blue ones and would have to pretend they were perfect.

Ha!

The joke was on me when ten minutes later she showed up at the furniture store.  She was between jobs nearby and couldn’t resist racing over to the store to see if we had lost our minds.

To be fair, I have bought dozens of very weird chairs in my life and she had a right to be concerned.

But it was still funny.

hurricane coming?

It looks like we didn’t purchase our generator in time for the first hurricane.  We might get hit with Hurricane Joaquin late Sunday night.

And there’s no time to order the generator and get it hooked into our electric and propane systems by Sunday.

Plan B:  fill water jugs, buy batteries, check the food supplies.

I’m still unpacking, so this is a little too much to think about right now.

Here are some pictures from the last day on the road:

Banjo Man packs up his stuff for the last day on the road.

Interesting New York beer seen in a gas station.

The unpacking is going slowly.  I keep taking breaks, checking email, making coffee, doing laundry, researching generators, buying sewing machine lights and reading the news.

Here’s what I just ordered on Amazon.

sewing machine light

I saw it in the quilting store in Sioux City, Iowa.  Little LED lights stick to the underside of the machine.

Pure genius.

I love to machine quilt, but having enough light to see what I’m doing (especially when I’m using extra-fine white thread on white fabric) is always an issue.

I’ve even watched a you tube video on how to install it.

Oh, yes, such a productive day….

home on monday night

13 1/2 hours on the road.

605 miles.

A very long day, but we are happy to be off the road after 8 days of travel.

This was by far the hardest day.  Rain, semi trucks, traffic, traffic jams, endless construction…

But we kept going, trading off driving every two hours and stopping only for bathroom breaks and to buy food to eat on the road.

Did I tell you that we are flying next year?
