counting the miles

2015-06-06 001I’ve been trying to plan our road trip.

We’re taking a much different route this year, which is exciting for me.  But Banjo Man is in the middle of cataract removal (one eye fixed last week, one eye to be fixed next week) and I am still dealing with the “almost frozen” shoulder.

Physical therapy is helping, but will I be ready to drive across the country in two weeks?

Will Banjo Man be able to drive?

We’re feeling optimistic, but I’m also planning for short days on the road with lots of sightseeing.

For instance, I want a photo op with the Largest Basket in the World.

Doesn’t everyone?

Banjo Man wants to follow the trail of the Mountain Men in Wyoming.

I have a cemetery to visit in West Virginia.

And then there are our favorite rest stops, the giant antique malls.

Ohio has a lot of ’em.

We were going to buy a new cooler today, in honor of a new summer and a new road trip.  I’d heard that the Yeti coolers were the best.  We could keep our water and yogurt and fresh fruit and vegetables cool all day and all night and all the next day.

And then we saw the Yeti coolers.  And the prices of them.

If you have $299.00 for a cooler, click here.

I think we’re going to stick with styrofoam.

fillin’ in time, fillin’ in pots

Story Man likes to drive me around the neighborhoods so I can see interesting “Keep Austin Weird” houses and landscapes.  So during my last visit (Saturday = John Prine, Sunday = Strange Brew & family, Monday = shopping in Georgetown, Tuesday = Lady Bird Wildflower Center and Black’s BBQ), Wednesday was also going to be busy.

Check out this yard, home of the Big Chicken, in South Austin.

2015-05-19 150Can you believe this “quilt” is really a mosaic creation???

2015-05-19 147What a beautiful piece of art.

On Wednesday Story Man,  DMP and I had some time to kill because the Happy Hour at the Saxon Pub didn’t start until 6 PM.

Wednesdays are always a bit long.  The Johnny Nicholas happy hour is a tradition that cannot–CANNOT–be forsaken.   We wait for it all day.

2013-03-13 074

Johnny Nicholas at the Saxon Pub.

But Story Man had a plan which involved DMP, Master Gardener, helping him with his pepper plants.  Last fall Retired Mountain Lady gave me a huge box of unwanted peppers–the woman absolutely refused to can or chop or preserve more than three tons of peppers, go figure—and I mailed them to Story Man in Austin.

He was thrilled.  He is still talking about it.  He saved some seeds and planted them and they sprouted and he is so excited.

(He must get his Farmer Genes from Banjo Man’s side of the family)

So off we went to Home Depot, where DMP gave advice and a lovely Home Depot assistant named Katie helped us select just the right pots for the peppers.  Katie was growing peppers, too.

We were also looking for something to hold the plants that would look nice in front of the condo.

I voted for these, found outside of a Georgetown antique shop and not purchased.

2015-05-18 014

I think of these as “Austin Cool”. No one else does, though.

DMP and Story Man found some pots they liked, and after more than half an hour of trying to find the price (they had been there a long time), the HD ladies announced that the pots were one cent.

A penny.  Each.

Story Man bought 4.  Katie bought 1.

Clearly a deal.

2015-05-20 002

2015-05-20 001

Only 90 degrees with 90% humidity.

DMP planted a little succulent garden.

DMP planted a little succulent garden.

After all of the plant-soil-pot excitement, we went to Michaels, where I introduced Story Man to the thrill of Michael’s coupons and sales on frames.  Story Man’s hobby is framing things, by the way.  He collects art and posters and prints and maps the way I collect vintage tablecloths, so I don’t comment or criticize.  Glass houses and all that.

By the way, I am still regretting not buying the red and white tablecloth with the check patterns and flowers in Georgetown.  What was I thinking????  It was gorgeous!!

Then we stopped at Home Goods, because DMP wanted to see it.

And then….and then….and then????

TORCHY’S TACO’S!!!!!

My favorite food in Austin?   The fried avocado taco!!!

DMP was anxious to try one, having read about it on the blog about 9 times.  She loved it, or said she did.

2012-03-07 041

This little beauty is always delicious.

And then we went back to the condo so DMP and Story Man could do what they needed to do with the plants and the pots and the dirt.  I stretched out inside on the couch and fanned myself with one of Story Man’s maps.

But the real excitement would begin at 6 PM, from a table-with-a-good-view at the Saxon.

Gardeners get thirsty.

Pot shoppers work up a thirst.

Johnny had a few surprise guest that night.  David Greely and  Steve Riley (of Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys) were in town recording a new cd with Johnny, so they came along to continue the musical party.

And then who was in the audience?  Marcia Ball, who was invited up on stage to join the guys.  She played a 6-minute solo that brought a cheering crowd to a standing ovation.

Just another Wednesday night in Austin.

I bought Banjo Man a new Johnny Nicholas cd so he wouldn’t feel too badly about missing out.

Banjo Man feels badly despite the gift.

Next year, Banjo Man.  Next year.

bachelorette time!

Yes, it’s that time of year again!  The Bachelorette has begun another season!  I started watching while in Austin–with my trusty notepad in my lap as the guys exited the limo–and will catch the rest of the shows while on the road with Banjo Man and then with My French Friend Janou at the lake.  Monday nights are when Janou and I eat peach pie, sip wine and scream at the television set.

Good times.

Up until now I’ve stayed away from the “spoilers” out there online, so I could bring you my Man Picks and fill you in a little bit on the show’s first two episodes.

the-bachelorette

First of all, there were two bachelorettes offered up to the 25 guys.   Bad idea, ABC.  Made for an awkward and a tad bit boring Meet and Greet.  I hope they never do that again.  But from the beginning of the previous show, The Bachelor (remember Farmer Chris?), the powers-that-be had–so it was rumored— practically guaranteed Britt the Bachelorette gig if she wasn’t picked to be The Farmer’s Wife.

During the show she lost her fan base due to excessive weeping and drama.  And she left before Chris the Farmer sent her home.

01-brittcrying

No one likes a Whiny Girl.

Second Runner Up, Kaitlyn, was a fan favorite.  Funny, irreverent and outspoken, she gathered a huge amount of fans who wanted her to be the next Bachelorette.

So at the First Night Cocktail Party, the 25 guys voted which gal to keep by dropping a rose into a box.  It was a bit bizarre and creepy.

shawn rose box

And there was a drunk bachelor who kept taking off his clothes and shouting, “I’m all horned up!”

Ryan-McDill-Drunk-490x347

This is what “horned up” looks like?

He made me glad I never went to college.

Tuesday night’s one hour edition announced that Kaitlyn had won the rose vote.  Britt left weeping and went back to her hotel to call her mother.  BUT one of the guys, a Nashville songwriter, left the Bachelorette cocktail party to go comfort her.  Because he’d only come on the show for her and since she wasn’t going to be there, then he was done.  He probably wrote a couple of songs about it.

Britt was very happy to get something out of the night, so they went out for ice cream together and hugged a lot.  For some strange reason they both wore leggings.

brittbrady

I didn’t know men wore leggings, did you?  Is that strange or am I just old?

Anyway, back to Kaitlyn.

Kaitlyn.

Kaitlyn.

Here are the men worth watching–in my humble opinion:

Ben Z.

Ben Z.

I think Ben Z. has “nice guy” written all over him.  He was featured in the promo and was the last man out of the limo, in position #25.  If he doesn’t get fed up with the craziness of the show he will be in this for a good long while.
Kaitlyn thinks he’s hot.

Ian.

Ian.

Ian is incredibly mature and is crazy about Kaitlyn (having seen her on The Bachelor).  He was a runner at Princeton, then was in a terrible accident and was told he’d probably never walk again.  But Ian now runs!   On the beach! He’s an executive recruiter in California.  I think he is way too mature for Kaitlyn and I have a feeling he will voluntarily leave the show sometime in the future.
He was featured in his own promo and seems so, so nice.  After this show he will have women running after him on the beach for the rest of his life.
Kaitlyn thinks he’s hot.

Shawn B.

Shawn B.

Shawn B. supposedly set hearts a-flutter all over America when he popped out of the limo last Monday night.  Does he look like Ryan Gosling to you?  I’m not sure.  He got the First Impression Rose and a kiss on the first night.  I think he’ll go far.  Very far.
And Kaitlyn thinks he’s hot.  Very hot.

Joshua.

Joshua.

Oh, boy.  I love the plaid shirt.  I love that he is from Idaho.  I love his two bull dogs.  And his sense of humor.  He’s a farmer and a welder.  He even welded a rose to present to Kaitlyn the first night.  He also had his own promo.
He’ll go far, I hope, especially because Kaitlyn thinks welded roses are really hot.

Those are my top four, but here are a few more contenders.  They’re a little quirky, but so is Kaitlyn.

Jared from Rhode Island.

Jared from Rhode Island.

I have to give a shout out to the local boy.  I wish he’d shave off that beard and clean up his face, though.  I’m sure his mother has told him the same thing a hundred times.  He is funny and seems like a pleasant young man.  He originally came for Britt–he voted for her to stay–and actually told Kaitlyn that.  I thought that would get him kicked out, but she appreciated the honesty.
And she thinks he’s hot.

Joe.

Joe.

Joe is from Kentucky, with a thick Southern accent that Kaitlyn thinks is hot.

Daniel.

Daniel.

My only note on Daniel was the word “funny”.  That’s enough for me!  Kaitlyn has a group of guys with great senses of humor.

Tanner.

Tanner.

Tanner is from Kansas City.  I don’t remember what he does for a living, but he has a good sense of humor and seems nice enough.  I don’t get any crazy vibes from him.  And I don’t remember if Kaitlyn thinks he’s hot or not, but I thought he was funny.

Speaking of crazy:

Tony

Tony

Meet Tony from St. Louis.  He is a “healer”, he says.  He talks nonsense, in riddles, with very long sentences.  I’ve never seen a more self-absorbed bachelor contestant in 30 seasons of the show.  I’m hoping the producers will make Kaitlyn keep him around because although I cringe whenever he launches into an explanation of what love is or how to communicate, he is highly entertaining.  And the expressions on the guys’ faces when Tony is pontificating are hilarious.
If you remember “Coach” on Survivor, you would suspect Tony is his long lost son.

So….to recap….Kaitlyn thinks almost everyone is hot.  And she likes hot men.

kaitlyn-bachelorette

Stay tuned.  I’ll recap the next episode in a few days.

stop and smell the wildflowers

2015-05-19 059

Story Man (aka Son #2, as most of you know) wanted to take DMP somewhere special  Tuesday, which was his day off from the BBQ pit.

Story Man loves the barbecue pit.  Story Man loves DMP.

And because DMP is a Master Gardener Extraordinaire, he came up with a plan:  Lady Bird Johnson’s Wildflower Center.

Brilliant, Story Man.  Brilliant.

Here’s the Center’s Mission Statement:

“Lady Bird Johnson, our former first lady, and actress Helen Hayes founded an organization in 1982 to protect and preserve North America’s native plants and natural landscapes. First as the National Wildflower Research Center and later as the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, this special place exists to introduce people to the beauty and diversity of wildflowers and other native plants. Every day, the Wildflower Center brings life to Mrs. Johnson’s vision in its public gardens, its woodlands and sweeping meadows as well as in internationally influential research. In 2006, the Center became an Organized Research Unit of the University of Texas at Austin.

Decades ago, Mrs. Johnson recognized that our country was losing its natural landscapes and its natural beauty. As much as 30 percent of the world’s native flora is at risk of extinction. The Wildflower Center was intended to help preserve and restore that beauty and the biological richness of North America. Since then, the Center has become one of the country’s most credible research institutions and effective advocates for native plants.

The Center’s gardens display the native plants of the Central Texas Hill Country, South and West Texas, while the Plant Conservation Program protects the ecological heritage of Texas by conserving its rare and endangered flora. The Native Plant Information Network is a database of more than 7,200 native species available online.

The Land Restoration Program applies knowledge of ecological processes to restoring  damaged landscapes. The Center’s education programs for children and adults teach people about their natural surroundings and how to grow native plants in their own backyards.”

Just south of Austin, it’s easy to find and easy to drive to.

DMP was in heaven.  She touched the plants.  She smelled the plants.  She studied the plants.  She bought plant-themed souvenirs at the gift shop.

We were there for several very hot, very humid hours.

But it was a blast.

shopping in georgetown

2015-05-18 012

Texas Longhorns are everywhere!

Last Monday my daughter-in-law took DMP and I to a town north of Round Rock.  Georgetown is one of those beautiful little Texas towns with its downtown built around a center square and a courthouse plopped in the middle of it.

2015-05-18 006

We went into every single one of these stores. Really. We did.

2015-05-18 008We checked out one of the wine stores but decided we didn’t need to start drinking at 10:30 AM, so we bought each other funny dish towels instead.

Who doesn’t like a funny dish towel????

2015-05-18 009

We shopped in several antique stores. I resisted buying another vintage tablecloth.

We shopped in several antique stores. I resisted buying another vintage tablecloth.  It just about killed me.

We decided not to get tattoos and enter the contest.

We made new friends.

One of our first stops, the music store! I think DMP bought something……

The window of the candy store. I bought a red basket shaped like a cowboy boot. Everyone else was jealous.

It was warm, it was humid, it was Texas!  Somehow we managed to shop despite the weather.  Fun, fun, fun!

2015-05-21 005My daughter-in-law presented DMP and I with Mother’s Day gifts!  Here’s mine, which looks exactly like my dobro!  Dancing Mandolin Player received a necklace with a you-know-what on it.

We love them.

Thank you, Amber, for thinking of us Idaho musicians and our beloved instruments.

the purgatory players and church in austin

Thunderstorms.  Rain.  Lightning.  That all happened early Sunday morning in Austin.  We woke late, having been awakened off and on by the storm.  And we had no electricity.

But we knew where to go for coffee and breakfast tacos.

And for music.  Lots of music.

2013-03-23 011It’s a coffee house, it’s a music venue, it’s a wi fi hotspot.

DMP loved it.

Then we headed up to Son #1’s house in Round Rock.  Amber and my adorably chatty grandson were happy to see us, as was the dog.  Amber made guacomole and a delicious Mexican beef stew.  We brought bristle blocks and raspberry jam and a box of gourmet cupcakes from the South Congress cupcake trailer.

2015-05-17 015

It’s always fun to have an uncle to tease!!

Later on we thought about going out to hear some music at the Continental Club, but that thought lasted about thirty seconds.  The storm was over, the power was back on and the three of us were in bed early.

Story Man had to work at 7:30 Monday morning, while DMP and I were going north to Round Rock and Georgetown for some Texas-style shopping.

To be continued…

hello in there, hello.

The whole purpose of this whirlwind trip to Austin was to see John Prine in concert.

Dancing Mandolin Player, my two Austin sons and I drove downtown to Bass Hall, located on the University of Texas campus right behind the football stadium.

We arrived a few minutes early, before the box office and the “Will Call” window opened.

I had ten extra  minutes to pray that I hadn’t been scammed by a ticket website last December 8th.

At 6:30 I received my four tickets and two minutes later we were in line to get into the building.

“Wow,” one of the volunteers said.  “Nice seats!!”

Sigh of relief.

We ate in the cafe.  We browsed John Prine’s merchandise (DMP bought a hat and a cd), we found our seats:

A-Row Center.

Be still my heart.

John Prine at Bass Hall. Photo by DMP.

John Prine at Bass Hall.

He sang for two hours without stopping.

Bass Hall was packed to the rafters with his fans.

I first heard of John Prine when I went to a Kris Kristofferson show in the early 1970’s.  He sang a song by “my good friend John Prine” called “Hello In There”.

And when John Prine sang it Saturday night I cried.  Sometimes in life things come full circle and hearing that song live was one of those times.

I felt like the luckiest person on the planet.

heading to texas with DMP

Last Friday Dancing Mandolin Player and I packed our bags and headed to Spokane to catch a plane to Texas.

IMG_20150515_155829

In my carry-on rolling bag was the receipt for John Prine concert tickets.

We were very excited because neither one of us had ever seen him in concert and we like to sing John Prine songs with the band.

I was a little nervous about the tickets.  I’d bought them through what I hoped was the John Prine fan site, through a ticket-purchasing program that had promised the best seats in the house and would be reserved before the seats were open to the general public.  I’d bought four tickets (the max allowed by the fan club) and planned on Son #1 and Son #2 joining us.

Anyway, we boarded the plane and I’d hoped that my window seat would provide a view of the lake.

If I could download the photos of the lake I would.  Instead you can see the clouds covering the lake.

IMG_20150515_155621

We landed in Phoenix, which didn’t have rain when we landed but then ended up with a massive storm that grounded planes for a while.

IMG_20150515_180926

We had a four hour layover which meant shopping.  Lots of shopping.  We didn’t buy much, though.  Just some rattlesnake eggs.

Then it was on to Austin, a short 2 hour flight, to land at 11:15 PM and meet Son #2 (aka Story Man), who looked happy to see that we’d made it to Austin safely.

Why do our grown children wonder what we’re doing and think we’re going to get in trouble somewhere along the way????
