road trip day 2: thank you, chickie williams

I’d never been to Wheeling, West Virginia, though I’d tried for the past three years to plan our days on the road to make it there.

I wanted to go to Chickie Williams’ grave and say thank you for the songs, thank you for teaching me, a 10 year old, to sing (even though ever since I tend to sing with her sweet accent and try so very hard not to because I am from New England and it makes me sound a little odd) and thank you for giving me such good childhood memories.

And yes, I still have my original vinyl album (a prized childhood possession) and a collection of her cd’s.

I wrote about Chickie Williams several years ago, on my Chickie Williams blog post.

Chickie Williams020Isn’t she gorgeous?

I used the contact email on the Doc and Chickie Williams website and asked about visiting Wheeling.  I explained I had been a fan since I was a child, that I would like to put flowers on her grave and see her “star” on the sidewalk downtown.  I asked if there were any other places I should see.

Two weeks later I received an email from Chickie Williams’ daughter.  I almost fell off my office chair.  An email from Chickie Williams’ daughter????

She asked when we were coming through Wheeling and offered the possibility of meeting for lunch  (now at this point I was so excited I couldn’t type a coherent email back to her for many, many minutes).  She would fill me in on Wheeling then.  I emailed her my cell phone number and she said she would be in touch before Saturday (our arrival day).  Through emails and phone calls, we arranged to meet at a Perkins restaurant for lunch.

When she asked how she would know me, I told her, “I’ll be the one in the lobby  holding your mother’s album!”

I’d brought the jacket with me (minus the vinyl record inside) so I could pose with it at the “star” and also show it to “Peeper”.  The three Williams’ daughters had fun nicknames and appeared with their famous parents on stage for many years.  I’d seen the pictures.

Anyway…there is no way I can do this story justice, not now.  I’m not sure I can explain what it was like to meet these women who I’d never met and yet had so much in common with.

For instance, I learned that Chickie’s favorite author was  Zane Grey.  And her favorite book of his was “Light of the Western Stars”.   Her father had given her the book, as mine had.  She loved it so much that she reread it often and named one of her daughters after the heroine.

We ended up meeting all three daughters, going to Chickie and  Doc Williams’ home, seeing a wall of photos and listening to stories.

And then these lovely, kind women started singing.  And they asked me to sing.  And we all sang those old, special, beautiful songs right there in that beautiful old home, with Chickie’s portrait on the living room wall looking at us.

As Peeper said to me when we met, “Any fan of my parents is family, and you are family now.”

I totally fell in love with them.  I don’t know how any one could not.  I felt like I’d come home to a place I hadn’t known I’d missed so much.

day one, zane grey part 2:

I’m in a hotel in Terre Haute, Indiana.  It’s the end of day three here on the road and I’m very, very behind on posting blogs.

But there is so much to say!!

I have photos of Zane Grey’s living room and office.  And front porch.  I’ve always loved visiting the homes–and offices–of famous writers.  And this particular visit was a real highlight, due to how beautifully preserved it was.

road trip day one: zane grey pilgrimage part 1

I’m making several special stops on this year’s road trip west.   I’ve wanted to do these little pilgrimages for years, but various circumstances and deadlines and commitments kept getting in the way.

Not this year.

When I–a skinny bookworm–was growing up, my father gave me a book that he loved.  As my grandfather had loved.  I still have that battered first edition.  It smells very old and it is falling apart, but it’s a beloved possession.

light of the western stars cover

I still reread it once a year.  It differed from most of Grey’s other works in that it was told in a female point of view and was a “conflict of lifestyles” romance.   I read all of his other books and was amazed at the difference in tone and characterization.  Years later I read an article that suggested that Grey’s wife Dolly may have written some of his novels, that he would mail descriptions of his travels (and he was an adventurous world traveler) home to his wife, who was raising the children, editing his manuscripts and dealing with the business of publishing.

Zane Grey, called “the greatest storyteller of the American West” was one of the most popular writers of his time.  After he and Dolly married–and before he became famous and moved to Hollywood–they lived in a house on the Delaware River, in Lackwaxen, Pennsylvania.

This morning Banjo Man and I headed to Lackawaxen, 226 miles from home.

First we packed the car.

And then, about an hour and a half into the trip we became very hungry.

2015-06-19 004We missed the first road to Lackawaxen, so we had to take a different route.  And Banjo Man took four wrong turns, two of which were my fault.

We managed to see a sign for the Zane Grey museum but were blocked by a “Road Closed” barricade.  A woman at the general store told us to go around the other way–the “Scenic Road” we needed to be on looped along the Delaware River.

We made a lot of left turns and found the other end of the Scenic Road, but it was blocked off.

And because we were lost we crossed this famous, historic toll road bridge.  Twice.

2015-06-19 005

And then Banjo Man, MY HERO, had had enough with barricades, so he just drove right around it onto the forbidden, blocked off road.

I was so happy.

And we eventually found Zane Grey’s house.

2015-06-19 0072015-06-19 006To Be Continued…because the Hampton Inn’s internet is really, really slow and I can wait no longer for the photos to load and I have to go to sleep now.

bird’s eye view

Banjo Man now has what he calls “bionic eyes”.

He is thrilled.

So am I, especially because I’m about to get in a car with him and drive for 3000 miles.

But there’s one strange side affect, most likely caused by going from thick glasses to no glasses:  without the distortion of glass, everything seems bigger.

objexts

For instance, he became transfixed by the size of the tv remote.

I need to pick it up with two hands,” he cried.

“Look at my new shoes!  They’re HUGE!”

“The forks look 18″ long!”

It goes on and on.

And it is hilarious.

oversized-chairs

I don’t know how long it will take him to adjust, but for now Life Among The Giants is keeping Banjo Man very busy.

the force is with me

2015-06-04 002

Purchased at SewExpo in hopes that I would use it for a summer quilt.

I’ll be having company at the lake in July.

My grandson.

2014-05-17 016

He has never the seen the lake or the mountains or our gravel roads.  He has never eaten his grandmother’s peach pie or picked raspberries from the garden.

Banjo Man and I are beyond excited.

So to honor this occasion I am, of course, making a quilt for the little guy to nestle under at night when the cooler breezes come down the mountain.

2015-06-04 003

This glows in the dark!!!

2015-06-04 001I’ve had some fun putting this together.

counting the miles

2015-06-06 001I’ve been trying to plan our road trip.

We’re taking a much different route this year, which is exciting for me.  But Banjo Man is in the middle of cataract removal (one eye fixed last week, one eye to be fixed next week) and I am still dealing with the “almost frozen” shoulder.

Physical therapy is helping, but will I be ready to drive across the country in two weeks?

Will Banjo Man be able to drive?

We’re feeling optimistic, but I’m also planning for short days on the road with lots of sightseeing.

For instance, I want a photo op with the Largest Basket in the World.

Doesn’t everyone?

Banjo Man wants to follow the trail of the Mountain Men in Wyoming.

I have a cemetery to visit in West Virginia.

And then there are our favorite rest stops, the giant antique malls.

Ohio has a lot of ’em.

We were going to buy a new cooler today, in honor of a new summer and a new road trip.  I’d heard that the Yeti coolers were the best.  We could keep our water and yogurt and fresh fruit and vegetables cool all day and all night and all the next day.

And then we saw the Yeti coolers.  And the prices of them.

If you have $299.00 for a cooler, click here.

I think we’re going to stick with styrofoam.

fillin’ in time, fillin’ in pots

Story Man likes to drive me around the neighborhoods so I can see interesting “Keep Austin Weird” houses and landscapes.  So during my last visit (Saturday = John Prine, Sunday = Strange Brew & family, Monday = shopping in Georgetown, Tuesday = Lady Bird Wildflower Center and Black’s BBQ), Wednesday was also going to be busy.

Check out this yard, home of the Big Chicken, in South Austin.

2015-05-19 150Can you believe this “quilt” is really a mosaic creation???

2015-05-19 147What a beautiful piece of art.

On Wednesday Story Man,  DMP and I had some time to kill because the Happy Hour at the Saxon Pub didn’t start until 6 PM.

Wednesdays are always a bit long.  The Johnny Nicholas happy hour is a tradition that cannot–CANNOT–be forsaken.   We wait for it all day.

2013-03-13 074

Johnny Nicholas at the Saxon Pub.

But Story Man had a plan which involved DMP, Master Gardener, helping him with his pepper plants.  Last fall Retired Mountain Lady gave me a huge box of unwanted peppers–the woman absolutely refused to can or chop or preserve more than three tons of peppers, go figure—and I mailed them to Story Man in Austin.

He was thrilled.  He is still talking about it.  He saved some seeds and planted them and they sprouted and he is so excited.

(He must get his Farmer Genes from Banjo Man’s side of the family)

So off we went to Home Depot, where DMP gave advice and a lovely Home Depot assistant named Katie helped us select just the right pots for the peppers.  Katie was growing peppers, too.

We were also looking for something to hold the plants that would look nice in front of the condo.

I voted for these, found outside of a Georgetown antique shop and not purchased.

2015-05-18 014

I think of these as “Austin Cool”. No one else does, though.

DMP and Story Man found some pots they liked, and after more than half an hour of trying to find the price (they had been there a long time), the HD ladies announced that the pots were one cent.

A penny.  Each.

Story Man bought 4.  Katie bought 1.

Clearly a deal.

2015-05-20 002

2015-05-20 001

Only 90 degrees with 90% humidity.

DMP planted a little succulent garden.

DMP planted a little succulent garden.

After all of the plant-soil-pot excitement, we went to Michaels, where I introduced Story Man to the thrill of Michael’s coupons and sales on frames.  Story Man’s hobby is framing things, by the way.  He collects art and posters and prints and maps the way I collect vintage tablecloths, so I don’t comment or criticize.  Glass houses and all that.

By the way, I am still regretting not buying the red and white tablecloth with the check patterns and flowers in Georgetown.  What was I thinking????  It was gorgeous!!

Then we stopped at Home Goods, because DMP wanted to see it.

And then….and then….and then????

TORCHY’S TACO’S!!!!!

My favorite food in Austin?   The fried avocado taco!!!

DMP was anxious to try one, having read about it on the blog about 9 times.  She loved it, or said she did.

2012-03-07 041

This little beauty is always delicious.

And then we went back to the condo so DMP and Story Man could do what they needed to do with the plants and the pots and the dirt.  I stretched out inside on the couch and fanned myself with one of Story Man’s maps.

But the real excitement would begin at 6 PM, from a table-with-a-good-view at the Saxon.

Gardeners get thirsty.

Pot shoppers work up a thirst.

Johnny had a few surprise guest that night.  David Greely and  Steve Riley (of Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys) were in town recording a new cd with Johnny, so they came along to continue the musical party.

And then who was in the audience?  Marcia Ball, who was invited up on stage to join the guys.  She played a 6-minute solo that brought a cheering crowd to a standing ovation.

Just another Wednesday night in Austin.

I bought Banjo Man a new Johnny Nicholas cd so he wouldn’t feel too badly about missing out.

2004_1224xmas0005 (2)

Banjo Man feels badly despite the gift.

Next year, Banjo Man.  Next year.

bachelorette time!

Yes, it’s that time of year again!  The Bachelorette has begun another season!  I started watching while in Austin–with my trusty notepad in my lap as the guys exited the limo–and will catch the rest of the shows while on the road with Banjo Man and then with My French Friend Janou at the lake.  Monday nights are when Janou and I eat peach pie, sip wine and scream at the television set.

Good times.

Up until now I’ve stayed away from the “spoilers” out there online, so I could bring you my Man Picks and fill you in a little bit on the show’s first two episodes.

the-bachelorette

First of all, there were two bachelorettes offered up to the 25 guys.   Bad idea, ABC.  Made for an awkward and a tad bit boring Meet and Greet.  I hope they never do that again.  But from the beginning of the previous show, The Bachelor (remember Farmer Chris?), the powers-that-be had–so it was rumored— practically guaranteed Britt the Bachelorette gig if she wasn’t picked to be The Farmer’s Wife.

During the show she lost her fan base due to excessive weeping and drama.  And she left before Chris the Farmer sent her home.

01-brittcrying

No one likes a Whiny Girl.

Second Runner Up, Kaitlyn, was a fan favorite.  Funny, irreverent and outspoken, she gathered a huge amount of fans who wanted her to be the next Bachelorette.

So at the First Night Cocktail Party, the 25 guys voted which gal to keep by dropping a rose into a box.  It was a bit bizarre and creepy.

shawn rose box

And there was a drunk bachelor who kept taking off his clothes and shouting, “I’m all horned up!”

Ryan-McDill-Drunk-490x347

This is what “horned up” looks like?

He made me glad I never went to college.

Tuesday night’s one hour edition announced that Kaitlyn had won the rose vote.  Britt left weeping and went back to her hotel to call her mother.  BUT one of the guys, a Nashville songwriter, left the Bachelorette cocktail party to go comfort her.  Because he’d only come on the show for her and since she wasn’t going to be there, then he was done.  He probably wrote a couple of songs about it.

Britt was very happy to get something out of the night, so they went out for ice cream together and hugged a lot.  For some strange reason they both wore leggings.

brittbrady

I didn’t know men wore leggings, did you?  Is that strange or am I just old?

Anyway, back to Kaitlyn.

Kaitlyn.

Kaitlyn.

Here are the men worth watching–in my humble opinion:

Ben Z.

Ben Z.

I think Ben Z. has “nice guy” written all over him.  He was featured in the promo and was the last man out of the limo, in position #25.  If he doesn’t get fed up with the craziness of the show he will be in this for a good long while.
Kaitlyn thinks he’s hot.

Ian.

Ian.

Ian is incredibly mature and is crazy about Kaitlyn (having seen her on The Bachelor).  He was a runner at Princeton, then was in a terrible accident and was told he’d probably never walk again.  But Ian now runs!   On the beach! He’s an executive recruiter in California.  I think he is way too mature for Kaitlyn and I have a feeling he will voluntarily leave the show sometime in the future.
He was featured in his own promo and seems so, so nice.  After this show he will have women running after him on the beach for the rest of his life.
Kaitlyn thinks he’s hot.

Shawn B.

Shawn B.

Shawn B. supposedly set hearts a-flutter all over America when he popped out of the limo last Monday night.  Does he look like Ryan Gosling to you?  I’m not sure.  He got the First Impression Rose and a kiss on the first night.  I think he’ll go far.  Very far.
And Kaitlyn thinks he’s hot.  Very hot.

Joshua.

Joshua.

Oh, boy.  I love the plaid shirt.  I love that he is from Idaho.  I love his two bull dogs.  And his sense of humor.  He’s a farmer and a welder.  He even welded a rose to present to Kaitlyn the first night.  He also had his own promo.
He’ll go far, I hope, especially because Kaitlyn thinks welded roses are really hot.

Those are my top four, but here are a few more contenders.  They’re a little quirky, but so is Kaitlyn.

Jared from Rhode Island.

Jared from Rhode Island.

I have to give a shout out to the local boy.  I wish he’d shave off that beard and clean up his face, though.  I’m sure his mother has told him the same thing a hundred times.  He is funny and seems like a pleasant young man.  He originally came for Britt–he voted for her to stay–and actually told Kaitlyn that.  I thought that would get him kicked out, but she appreciated the honesty.
And she thinks he’s hot.

Joe.

Joe.

Joe is from Kentucky, with a thick Southern accent that Kaitlyn thinks is hot.

Daniel.

Daniel.

My only note on Daniel was the word “funny”.  That’s enough for me!  Kaitlyn has a group of guys with great senses of humor.

Tanner.

Tanner.

Tanner is from Kansas City.  I don’t remember what he does for a living, but he has a good sense of humor and seems nice enough.  I don’t get any crazy vibes from him.  And I don’t remember if Kaitlyn thinks he’s hot or not, but I thought he was funny.

Speaking of crazy:

Tony

Tony

Meet Tony from St. Louis.  He is a “healer”, he says.  He talks nonsense, in riddles, with very long sentences.  I’ve never seen a more self-absorbed bachelor contestant in 30 seasons of the show.  I’m hoping the producers will make Kaitlyn keep him around because although I cringe whenever he launches into an explanation of what love is or how to communicate, he is highly entertaining.  And the expressions on the guys’ faces when Tony is pontificating are hilarious.
If you remember “Coach” on Survivor, you would suspect Tony is his long lost son.

So….to recap….Kaitlyn thinks almost everyone is hot.  And she likes hot men.

kaitlyn-bachelorette

Stay tuned.  I’ll recap the next episode in a few days.
